For further thought and discussion:

  1. If we hope to be spiritually mature we must also be emotionally mature. What does it mean to be emotionally mature? What is the connection between emotions and our spiritual maturity?
  2. Jesus said if we know the truth, the truth will set us free (John 8:32). What kind of freedom is Jesus talking about? If we ignore our emotions, we might also be ignoring truth. What does it mean to be free emotionally?
  3. Augustine said, “Grant, Lord, that I may know myself that I may know Thee.” Describe the relationship between knowing God and knowing our selves. How is the knowledge of each inseparable from the other?
  4. We can all learn to grow emotionally in the context of relationships with others. How have others helped you grow emotionally (and spiritually)? What is the difference between a safe person and an unsafe person emotionally? Describe both.
  5. We need wisdom to grow emotionally. Read James 1:5 and 3:17. What is wisdom? Why is wisdom and essential in our emotional and spiritual development?
  6. Describe your emotional growth chart. What events have contributed to your development emotionally?
