Discipline is Not a Dirty Word

We all want to be good people and to do the things that Jesus said to do. Yet we often fall short and behave as we did before we entered a relationship with Christ. The Good News (the Gospel) is that genuine character change is actually possible. In fact, it's expected! We'll talk today about how this happens, and about our role in the process of "changing for good."

It's Your Move

In many ways, we live as if following Jesus means living tucked away within the impenetrable walls of our comfort zones. We reason, “God wouldn’t want me to be risky or to do something that would make me uncomfortable.” But here’s the truth: fully following Jesus requires risk. We’ve got one life, and if the Church really is the world’s only hope, we better make the most of our time. We can make a difference, but not by playing it safe. We just have to make a move. Listen, if we don’t storm the world with the love of Jesus, who will? It’s your move.

Give It All You Got

One of the greatest and most subtle temptations facing every well-intentioned church attendee is the temptation toward halfway Christianity. Let’s not get carried away, we reason. After all, who wants to be considered a fanatic? So we go about placing respectable limits on our devotion to God. But when left unattended, our spiritual development always moves toward entropy. Unless you dig in with diligence in your pursuit of God and unless you give it all you got, you will become a halfhearted follower of Jesus.

Getting Defensive

The Bible makes it very clear that every Christ-follower needs to be ready to defend their faith. All too often though, the call to defend the faith comes across as a hyper-intellectual pursuit of “being right” or at least proving other systems wrong. As a result people both within the church and without have become suspicious of the call to defend the faith. It often seems to generate more heat than light. Is being ready really just about knowing truths that make “us” right and “them” wrong or is there something more going on?

To Judge or Not to Judge

One of the most volatile areas in human interaction involves the real or perceived judging of others. Cries of, “Are you judging me?” or “Who are you to judge?” are common defenses against unwanted critiques. Actually the Bible tells us both to judge and not to judge. And God gives us several guidelines for knowing the difference.

About Face Value

Have you ever wondered why so much of our energy goes toward impressing people? Even from our childhood we are forced into situations where we are compared to another person and must convince people to accept us. Our society has a sort of unwritten code or systematic approval system to determine an individual’s value. We find ourselves being assessed to see if we measure up. What if Christ came to speak with authority and give us the value that we all are searching for? How might Christ and His actions inform our thinking on how we should measure ourselves and others? Let’s take a look.

Take a Look in the Mirror

The Bible draws a distinction that everyone of us knows is true: hearing is not the same as doing. We can listen to something and even agree with it, but there is still a chance we will do nothing about it. Biblical truth is intended not just for our information but also for our application. Listen to what God is saying, then do something. In every area of biblical truth, you can count on one thing: there’s an app for that.

Changing Your Mind

Have you ever tried really hard to change? Maybe you decided to turn over a new leaf or just muscle up and try harder, but the change just didn’t last. What if there was a way to experience lasting change in your life—change that isn’t based on external behavior, but is rooted in true inner transformation? There is a direct link between how you think and how you live. If you want to experience real change in your life, the kind of change that lasts, you must go to the source. You have to train your mind. That’s the place to begin.

Three Lessons Too Big to Ignore

Life is filled with lessons that come from our God who is eager to teach us. Through the Bible, God has communicated very specific lessons that are easily lost in life’s tangled web of distractions and alternatives. These lessons, so central to life, can even be obscured by church activity and drowned out by Christian chatter. Today, we’ll look at three lessons too big to ignore.

Five Lessons Learned the Hard Way

God is always teaching us lessons that change the way we view life and challenge the way we live. But sometimes these lessons are easy to miss especially if we are not listening. God never wastes experiences. We can learn valuable lessons even the hard way.
